Description
Coal ore is one of Minecraft's most common and essential early-game resources. It generates throughout the Overworld in large veins, particularly abundant in mountain biomes. The ore appears in two variants: normal coal ore in stone and deepslate coal ore below Y0. Unlike most ores, coal doesn't require smelting and can be used immediately after mining. Each ore block drops 1 coal, which can be crafted into blocks for storage or used directly as fuel. One coal can smelt 8 items or power a minecart for 4 minutes.
How to Find
Coal ore generates between Y-levels 320 and -64, most commonly at Y-level 95. It appears in veins of up to 17 blocks, often exposed in mountains and cliffs. Any pickaxe can mine coal. Fortune enchantment increases drops. Alternatively, can be obtained from Wither Skeletons or trading with villagers.
